Here are some time-tested money saving tips that surprisingly.. many people HATE!! :P
Honestly, its the worst-sounding advice that often makes the most sense (or cents)
10. Be healthy -- Yup, nobody likes being told that they are fat and lazy. But staying healthy can really cut the fees you pay to the doctors and also insurance premium as well.
9. Move to a foreign country (or even visit for health care) -- Thats so unpatriotic? Singapore has the best health-care system in the region, if not the world. Sorry, I think Malaysia's medical service is pretty good actually, considering how many Singaporeans cross the borders to get their Lasik done.
8. Quit smoking -- I expected the smoking addicts to hate this one, but considering 1 pack is costing $10+, smoking 1 pack a day will cost you $300 a month, $3600 a year that you can spend else where.
7. Buying used --
Why people hate buying used: 1) it's not new; 2) someone else has used it; 3) did I mention it's not new?
Really, is owning something brand new really worth that much more? There are many things that still work pretty well despite being used, like cars, bikes, electronic gadgets etc. Let someone else take the cost of depreciation.
6. Buy a house you can afford -- This one really irritates some people, I guess. "I have worked so hard, I deserve to stay in a nice condo/house to fit my status". Seriously, I read somewhere that housing loan should not exceed 2 times the household annual income, as a rough gauge of affordability.
5. Cutting your cable TV -- $45 per month on cable tv? The money can really add up. How much time do you have each day to spend on watching tv anyway?
4. Taking your lunch to work -- hmmm, it can be really paiseh to taobao lunch to work, I must admit.
3. Limiting small spending -- You can really save a tidy sum if you cut down on your spending on the "small" stuff, like $5 Starbucks latte during coffee breaks.
2. Not buying a pet -- Ok, a pet can really costs money. Pet food, pet doctors, pet courses, pet clothes... blah blah... you get the picture
1. Moving to a lower cost-of-living city (area) -- I have always suspected that cost-of-living in the outlying estates like Woodlands, Paris Ris, Jurong West may be slightly lower.
